Summer Reading: David Walliams Chapter Books + Giveaway

My daughter and I are always looking for new chapter books to read together. We recently enjoyed reading The Doldrums and Mr Puffball: Stunt Cat to the Stars and were ready for some new books.

Harper Collins sent us three new books from award winning author David Walliams. We received Awful Auntie, Ratburger and Grandpa’s Great Escape.

Awful Auntie

We are currently reading Awful Auntie. This is funny chapter book about a young girl who wakes up to find that her parents have perished (or have they??) and her aunt is now in charge.

Awful Auntie David Walliams

Synopsis

Stella Saxby is the sole heir to Saxby Hall. But awful Aunt Alberta and her giant owl will stop at nothing to get it from her. Luckily Stella has a secret – and slightly spooky – weapon up her sleeve…

The book is filled with fun illustrations and expression. Many words are bolded or in different fonts to catch the readers attention and bring emphasis on important events. I am really enjoying the narrator in Awful Auntie. The details and tidbits the narrator shares with the reader are great.

Overall this is a great chapter book with interesting characters and storyline. My daughter and I are always looking forward to bedtime so we can read a few more chapters of Awful Auntie.

Ratburger

As soon as we are done Awful Auntie we’ll be reading Ratburger.

Synopsis

Ratburger is the story of a little girl called Zoe. Things are not looking good for Zoe. Her stepmother Sheila is so lazy she gets Zoe to pick her nose for her. The school bully Tina Trotts makes her life a misery – mainly by flobbing on her head. And now the evil Burt from Burt’s Burgers is after her pet rat! And guess what he wants to do with it? The clue is in the title…

I think this book sounds hillarious and look forward to reading it with my daughter this summer.

Grandpa’s Great Escape

I’m happy to have this third David Walliams book to read once Awful Auntie and Ratburger are done.

Grandpa’s Great Escape is David Walliams latest book and already a #1 bestseller.

Synopsis

Jack’s Grandpa…

*wears his slippers to the supermarket

*serves up Spam à la Custard for dinner

*and often doesn’t remember Jack’s name

But he can still take to the skies in a speeding Spitfire and save the day…

An exquisite portrait of the bond between a small boy and his beloved Grandpa – this book takes readers on an incredible journey with Spitfires over London and Great Escapes through the city in a high octane adventure full of comedy and heart.

All three books are humorous. They have easy to follow storylines and all have many illustrations. I’m really happy to have been introduced to David Walliams books. I am sure once we are done these three books we’ll be picking up more of his chapter books.

You can find Awful Auntie, Ratburger and Grandpa’s Great Escape in book stores now. (I’ve even seen Grandpa’s Great Escape at Costco!).

  1. I would read Awful Auntie with my daughters first because they would find it super funny since they have such amazing aunts. They would love to tell they’re aunties all about it!

  2. I think I would read my grandchildren Demon Dentist first. Hopefully it would scare them into brushing their teeth better. 😉

  3. I would read the book Ratburger first as this book sounds very funny and I can hear the laughter all ready as we enjoy this book.
