DIY: Chinese New Year Banner

As a teacher I’m always trying to come up with creative ideas for seasonal crafts.

This year I came up with a fun collage idea for the Year of the Horse.

Here’s what you need:

  • Chinese Newspaper (check out your local Chinatown, there is usually a free publication)
  • Red construction paper
  • Red yarn
  • A print out of a horse (I found mine in the clip art images from Word)
  • A print out of the chinese character “horse” (google it)
  • Glue stick
  • A hole punch

How to do the project:

1 – tear the newspaper in strips

2 – glue the pieces on the red paper (leaving a red strip at the top and bottom)

3 – cut out your horse shape and chinese character then glue them on top of the newspaper

4 – punch two holes at the top of your red paper

5 – attach the red piece of yarn

My students LOVED doing this project. Tearing the newspaper was their favourite part of the project. I love how our banners turned out!

  1. Awesome. Crafts are such a great way to make learning fun! They could also use their own Chinese Zodiac Sign on the banners too for variety. I love your idea.
