April 22 is Earth Day. I absolutely love Earth Day and think it is so important to do special activities with your children to bring awareness about this day.
At school I am the teacher in charge of the Green Team. We are a team of grade 4 and 5 students that put on an Earth Fest every year. This event is filled with activities for kids, special demonstrations and presentations. I love bringing my own children to take part in the festivities.
With my children and students I always do Earth Friendly crafts around Earth Day. I also love to pull out books that focus on taking care of our planet and teach them about topics like gardening, animals and more.
This year I’ve got a few new books from the Earthly Pleasures boutique from DK Canada to share with my children and my class.
I received three DK Readers and am bringing them to my classroom for my students to enjoy. We’ve already got quite a few DK Readers in class. My students are drawn to these books. They love the topics covered in these books, the pictures and the length of the books.
The three DK Readers I received are Bugs and Us (Level 1), Earth Smart (Level 2) and Water Everywhere (Level 2). These books are filled with details and cover topics that kids want to learn about.
Bugs and Us introduces the reader to numerous bugs including bees, ladybugs and spiders. I love the pictures in this book. The information is easy to understand and the glossary reviews the important words in the book.
Earth Smart teaches kids how to take care of the environment. This book is the story of two children going to spend the day with their aunt. Together they learn about ways to take care of the Earth. They cover topics like recycling, using less electricity and purchasing food that’s grown close to home.
Water Everywhere explains where water comes from and why it’s so important. It’s filled with great photos and interesting facts.
The third books we received is called The Animal Book: A Visual Encyclopedia of Life on Earth. My kids love the Smitsonian books and this book is their latest favourite. We sit together every night and pick a few pages to explore. The book talks about so many different species of animals. I love reading this book with my children because it teaches us all something new.
The pictures in The Smitsonian Animal Book are incredible. I also love the scale boxes on every page that show you how big each animal is compared to a human. I love the conversations I’ve had with my children after reading the pages in this book. I know this is a book we will keep enjoying for years to come.
