Fall is here. It’s getting colder outside. Leaves are falling from trees. Winter jackets are coming out of the closet and the heat is turned on. The car is being used more for school drop off and pick up and for errands.

I must admit, I’m a little sad when the weather changes but I feel very lucky to have easy access to heat and more. None of this would be possible without oil.

Petroleum is a necessity in our lives. Without it we wouldn’t have gasoline for our cars. We wouldn’t have pavement for our roads. We would have limited ways to heat our homes.

I find it interesting that Canada has the third largest oil reserves in the world. Did you know that 97% of reserves in the Oil Sands are found in our country. Oil sands are a mixture of sand, water, clay and bitumen. Oil sands can be refined to make oil and ultimately fuel to power cars and heat homes. The three deposits in Canada are The Athabasca, Peace River, and Cold Lake areas in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Products in our everyday life made from oil:

  • ink
  • crayons
  • dishwashing liquids
  • deodorant
  • eyeglasses
  • CDs and DVDs
  • tires

I am proud that Canada is a producer of petroleum products. Oil sands are a secure source to meet our country’s growing demands.
