I have had the opportunity to test out and enjoy so many Super Duper Publications games. I am always impressed with the quality of their games and how they get kids talking.
A few weeks ago I received Granny’s Candies from Super Duper Publications. As soon as my kids saw the big red Super Duper Publications box they knew they were in for some fun.
We opened the box and started playing in minutes. Super Duper Publication always creates colourful games that get kids’ attention and peak their interest. Their games always have something for kids to collect (lizards, coins, candies…) Super Duper Publication games are colourful and well made.
For Granny’s Candies players are asked semantic questions. When they answer the question correctly they collect “candies” (soft, colourful, round tokens) as a reward. The player with the most candy at the end of the game wins. I ask you, what kid doesn’t want candy!
There are eight different categories of semantic cards.
- What Belongs?
- Name the Category.
- Action Words.
- Object Use/Function.
- Adjectives.
- Differences.
- Similarities.
- Which One Doesn’t Belong.
My daughter’s favourite category are the similarity cards. She loves telling me how two things are alike or different. We’ve worked on this category so much we’ve even seen some of the cards more than once! I was blown away at how easily my seven year old could answer these questions. I even had to take a moment to think about some of the answers.
Why I love Granny’s Candies:
- It gets kids thinking and talking
- It expands vocabulary skills
- It’s visually appealing to kids (and moms and dads!)
- It is a straightforward game (no difficult rules with this game)
- You can choose to work on one particular set of cards or on all eight semantic areas
Granny’s Candies also comes with a reproducible workbook with fabulous lessons and activities. I have used some of the worksheets in my classroom as warm up activities. My students have loved them!
You can play different variations of Granny’s Candies. You can play with four players or an entire classroom. Granny’s Candies is recommended for grades K and up. I also feel this game would be wonderful for students learning English as a second language.
Overall, Granny’s Candies is a super fun word game. It gets kids thinking and sharing their ideas. Kids love collecting the candy and feel great when they answer the questions. I look forward to playing this game with my children this summer and keep their minds sharp while they aren’t in the classroom.
Granny’s Candies will be available online starting June 1, 2014 at Super Duper Publications. It retails for $54.94. All orders of $75 or more at Super Duper Publications ships for FREE.
