Baby Taste Test: Heinz Baby Foods

I recently had the opportunity to try out some Heinz baby food for my little one.  I have to say, I don’t typically buy prepared baby food but I do always have a few items on hand for those days when I’m just not organized enough and need something quick and easy to feed my toddler.

I’ve tried different Heinz baby food products in the past – in fact, the only baby cereal my toddler would eat at first was of the Heinz variety – but the ones I picked for this review were new to us.  I tried out three canned varieties and a baby cereal:

  • Mom’s Recipe: Vegetable Pork and Apple Blend
  • Mom’s Recipe: Sweet Potato and Beef Medley
  • Green Beans
  • Oatmeal Cereal with Apple and Cinnamon

I chose the Mom’s Recipe jars because I found the recipes appealing, they sound a lot like the food I make her at home.  So I thought why not?  Pleasant surprise: the food isn’t completely pureed!  One of my hesitations to getting prepared baby food is that the food is too pureed and I’ve made an effort from the beginning to not feed my baby pureed foods in order to get her used to textures.  So I love this feature.  I served my toddler both of these recipes with whole wheat pasta and brown rice and she liked both!

Green beans aren’t something I typically make at home, because, well, I just don’t like green beans myself.  And I know that shouldn’t matter, but for some reason I find it hard to make food for my baby that I don’t enjoy.  So it is one of my regular baby food purchases and my little one actually loves green beans.  I served the Heinz Green Beans again with pasta and of course, it was a hit!  She couldn’t get enough of it.

I was skeptical of the Oatmeal Cereal with Apple and Cinnamon because my baby never seemed to like the oatmeal cereal when she was younger (she liked the mixed cereal variety), but I thought I would try it because to me, the apple and cinnamon flavouring seemed appealing.  I blended the cereal with boiled apple chunks and her breakfast smelled like a fresh baked apple pie!  She really liked the cereal with apples!  I was totally surprised and she ate a really good portion for breakfast.

I love that I have another option for breakfast now for her.  I’ve been racking my brain for a while now trying to think of new foods to feed her in the morning other than scrambled eggs and toast.  This is a quick and easy option and I’m so glad that she enjoyed it.

The ingredients on the side of the food jars and baby cereal are pretty simple.  This is something I always look for when buying food for my baby.  I watch the salt and sugar content and these varieties have no added salt or sugar.

Overall, I’d say these food choices were a hit and I plan on buying more Heinz baby food in the future.
